Travel in the slow lane

When we started planning our road trip I had no idea how family-orientated holiday parks had become. Granted, my only memories of holiday parks were from my childhood; I spent every summer in a cabin by the bay with my family but apart from a single pinball machine and a tennis court there wasn’t much for us to do.

Nowadays there’s water parks and jumping pillows, entire games rooms and pools with water slides. It’s what dreams are made of – colourful, fun-filled entertainment for kids who love being outdoors. Subsequently, it makes for a truly relaxing holiday experience for the parents. If I’ve learnt anything from our time in the various NRMA Parks and Resorts it’s this: if the kids are happy the parents are relaxed!

When we arrive at a caravan park, we love nothing more than checking in and staying put for a few days. As soon as the van is set up the kids take a scooter ride around the park and return with a full update on where everything is. We then prepare some food and settle in for a quiet afternoon by the caravan, our only plans being a beach walk or a swim. This is the very definition of relaxing for us; no need to go anywhere or do anything – simple days where we can slow down and enjoy the serenity.

Our days begin with lazy mornings and long breakfasts but as soon as the kids have finished eating they’re off to explore. Knowing they’re safe and enjoying themselves means that we can relax with tea and a book. By mid-morning they return for food (they have insatiable appetites!) and then we chat about the possibility of a swim.

Our days are peppered with family meals and swims, bike rides and park plays, afternoon naps and BBQ dinners. It’s what memories are made of, these kind of family holidays where everyone is happy and relaxed.

Regardless of where we stay – resort-style parks or parks surrounded by nature – we settle into holiday mode as soon as we arrive. Balmy, summer days are just right for a getaway in a holiday park. Go, make some holiday memories.
