1. Join a whale watching tour 

During the cooler months, Tathra’s waters burst to life with more than 40,000 humpback whales as they pass by on their annual migration from Antarctica. The Sapphire Coast is one of few places where these gentle giants stop to rest, feed and nurture their young, so whale watching here is second to none. And while holidaymakers regularly spot whales from the shore, there’s nothing like getting up close and personal aboard one of many local tour boats

2. Hit the mountain bike trails

You’re going to want to bring your mountain bike to Tathra; it’s considered one of the best destinations in Australia with more than 50km of trails to explore. There are exciting coastal tracks to suit kids, beginners, and experienced riders alike. Riders can even perfect their skills in a controlled environment at the Mountain Bike Skills Park here in town. And if you don’t have a mountain bike, worry not. Tathra Beach and Bike hires out a broad range, including mountain e-bikes for those deep in holiday mode.

3. Go snorkelling at Kianinny Bay 

The waters of Kianinny Bay are home to a dizzying array of marine life, from colourful fish to curious rays. With crystal clear water in a thousand shades of blue, this sheltered inlet is the ideal place to don your snorkel and fins and take a closer look at the magical world beneath. Adjacent to Bournda National Park, it’s a great spot for a picnic or to kick off the 9km Kangarutha walking track.

4. Grab a bite by the water at historic Tathra Hotel 

Built in 1888 and perched on a headland overlooking the ocean, Tathra Hotel has long been this little town’s social heart. With a seasonal menu serving the classics and plenty of seafood, it’s a great place for a meal with a view. There’s regular live music to set the holiday scene and the pub is home to Humpback Brewery, with craft brews made and served on site. Best of all, with no pokies or TAB this is a super family-friendly environment. The kids might even spot a whale or two.

5. Hike the Wharf to Wharf Walk 

Stretching from one historic wharf to another, this iconic 27km hike runs between Tathra and Merimbula. You’ll cross the ancient lands of the Yuin people as you walk along rugged cliffs, past freshwater lagoons, through untouched coastal bushland and along sprawling, empty beaches. The trek can be made in full as an overnight hike if you’re feeling adventurous, or walked in part as a day hike. Don’t forget to pack your swimmers!

6. Take a day trip to Bournda National Park

Looking to lose yourself in coastal wilderness for the day? You need only travel 10km south of Tathra to Bournda National Park which is considered a hidden gem of the Far South Coast. It’s a natural playground where near-empty beaches are fringed by native bushland and creeks meander lazily towards sprawling Wallagoot Lake, a prime for a kayak or SUP. Pack your hiking shoes, a picnic, the surfboards, the fishing rods and your swimmers, because you’ll want to spend all day immersed in this wonderland.

7. Go surfing

Set an early alarm because when you visit Tathra, you’ve got some of the Sapphire Coast’s best breaks at your fingertips. With more than 150 beaches to choose from, seasoned surfers and beginners alike will find a suitable wave on any given day. Iconic breaks like Pambula River Mouth and Bar Beach are bound to excite, but there’s nothing like the ease of strolling just a few metres from camp onto the sand at Tathra Beach to catch a wave.

8. Sample Tathra Oysters

If you’re an oyster lover, prepare to be blown away by Tathra Oysters. Grown in the waters of Nelson Lake in Mimosa Rocks National Park, their incredible flavour comes down to the pristine nature of their growing environment. A family-run operation, Tathra Oysters has claimed more than 180 awards since its inception in 1988. That’s one decorated oyster! During harvest season (December to June), visitors can buy farm fresh oysters directly from Tathra Oysters’ store in town.

9. Have brunch at Wild Orchid Café

An easy stroll across the road from NRMA Tathra Beachfront Holiday Park, you’ll find brunch perfection at Wild Orchid Café. This relaxed, contemporary space oozes cool coastal vibes – think beanbag chairs beneath umbrellas on the lawn – and the menu is just as inspiring. The locally grown, London-trained chef focuses on simple, vibrant food that reflects the season and the region. Grab a quick toastie and a fresh juice or BYO champagne and get comfy to make a proper holiday brunch of it.

10. Take a sunset stroll on the Tathra Headland Walk

Looking for an all-access walk that’s light on distance but heavy on dramatic coastal scenery? You’ll want to do the Tathra Headland Walk. After checking out the iconic, heritage-listed Tathra Wharf, you’ll traverse 300m of reclaimed timber boardwalk with panoramic views of the ocean. In the cooler months you’ll likely spot whales from this vantage point, while dolphins, seals and the odd fairy penguin can be seen year-round.
