Port Macquarie is full of fantastic attractions waiting to be explored. The Billabong Koala Wildlife Park is perfect for those wanting an up close and personal wildlife experience. The local icon Shrek, a 4.6-meter-long salt water croc is a must-see, along with the friendlier koalas that call the park home. For wildlife in its natural environment, Port Macquarie is a great spot for Whale Watching. Experience the majestic humpbacks migrating along the coastline, with cruises frequently departing the harbor between May and November. For spectacular coastal views a stop at Taking Point Lighthouse. Built in 1879, the lighthouse sits atop a rocky headland and provides panoramic views along the Mid-North Coast.
Adventures and sports
If you’re a sports and adventure enthusiast you’ve come to the right place. Port Macquarie has an endless list of fun-filled, blood pumping activities, sure to give you the thrill you’re after. During the summer months water sports are the popular choice with canoe hire and surfing lessons both available in town. For an aerial experience why not try sky diving, or rock climbing, you will be ticking off the bucket list items in no time. If you love the outdoors but want something more relaxing the area also offers horse-riding, great golf courses and the chance to hook a big one, with onshore and offshore fishing. For an even more unique experience why not take a camel ride on Lighthouse Beach.
Shopping and nightlife
From its many unique boutique stores dotted along the streets to its larger shopping centre complex’s, Port Mac will have you browsing and purchasing for hours. From fashion, accessories, jewellery and homewares there is something for everyone. The arthouse industries located in the centre of town is a beautiful glass studio offering handmade gifts, clothing and artwork. Port Macquarie also offers a lively nightlife. The best spots in town are Flow Bar, a beer garden and restaurant during the day and live music venue on weekends, the Beach House, a classic pub that offers DJs and live banks on weekends and Zebu Bar and Grill, a cocktail bar that also serves up live music and bar nibbles.
Dining and markets
The list of restaurants and cafes is endless in Port Macquarie. With so many located within walking distance of the park you will be spoilt for choice, but if you want a local’s recommendation speak with our reception staff who have put together a list of the very best in Port Mac. If you’re looking for fresh produce while in town on the fourth Saturday of every month drop by the local Wauchope Farmers Market. It’s delicious fresh fruit and veg is a taste of the best of Port Macquarie. The region also offers many wineries, with cellar doors and kitchens serving up mouth-watering creations.
Walking and cycle tours
Discover the spectacular coastlines of Port Macquarie on the coastal walk located in the Sea Acres National Park. One of the few locations where the forest meets the ocean, start the walk at Town Beach before winding along the coast past Flagstaff, Rocky Beach lookout and Harry’s lookout to Sea Acres. One in the National Park stroll along the enchanting Sea Acres Rainforest Boardwalk or drop into the Rainforest Centre while you’re there to take part in a guided Aboriginal cultural heritage tour. If you’re looking to cycle, make sure to take a ride along the Foreshore cycling track or head to the Port Macquarie Urban Mountain Bike Park for some off roading.
