Most travellers to the region don’t realise the town is home to a thriving event scene, from major sporting events and music festivals to local workshops and artist trails. To make sure you don’t miss a thing, we’ve pulled together the must do events to see and attend each season.
Bringing together a mix of Aussie bands, comedy acts, free workshops, food trucks and more, Festival of the Sun or FOTSUN, is an iconic local event on the festival calendar in Port Macquarie. Held annually in December, the event is hosted at our very own NRMA Port Macquarie Breakwall Holiday Park and each year takes on a new theme, with 2018 playing host to a ‘Roll on Up’ circus theme.
Currently in its 16th year of operation, this unique and quirky festival typically releases its musical line up from late July to early August, with tickets on sale from mid-August, but you’ll have to be quick, tickets sell out each year.

Located on Port Macquarie’s spectacular waterfront, IRONMAN 70.3 Port Macquarie is an event not to be missed, whether you’re a competitor looking for a challenge or a spectator wanting to join the lively crowds that line the race. Held annually in May, the event sees competitors swim the Hastings River and ride along the oceanfront course before setting out on foot to run into the heart of Port Macquarie via the Breakwall that runs adjacent to the park. A qualifier for the IRONMAN World Championships, if you’re looking to see some of Australia’s best athletes battle it out to make the wold stage, this is your chance.

Found a short 25-minute drive from NRMA Port Macquarie, if you’re in town during April we recommend heading out to the Wauchope Show. This community event showcases the best of agriculture and farming in the region with a range of interactive exhibits and displays. Currently in its 109th year, the show offers something for everyone with animal nurseries, harness racing, firework displays, a side show ally, plus much more.

Showcasing some of the best home-grown talent on the blues music scene, the Howling Moon Blues Festival is an annual event held in June at the Black Duck Brewery in Port Macquarie. Dedicated to bringing together passionate blues artists, the two-year-old event is the perfect environment for both avid blues fans as well as those looking to just sit back and enjoy the music.

There’s no better combination than blues and barbecue, and that’s exactly what this festival brings together. Held annually in September, the Blues and Barbecue Festival is a mouth-watering two days, filled with good food, music and some healthy competition. A key part of the event is the Buffalo Trace Australian Barbecue Wars, with nearly 100 teams cooking off in a variety of categories, it’s the largest barbecue competition in Australia. The best part of all? You’ll only have to step outside your cabin to attend with the event held at both NRMA Port Macquarie and spilling onto the Town Green.
